The Help Us Help You Contest! (OMG PRIZES!)

January 20, 2012 Brendon 9 Comments EoN Editorials

Here at EoN we have always supported the indie market. From indie movies to especially indie games, the small time guys with a ton of talent have made some incredible stuff that not many get to see and play. Since our start we have hired a writer who specializes in and loves the indie game scene; he has been a huge part of our project to bring some exposure to the lesser known games out there. There is a wide and expansive collection of independent titles out there in the world, and one of our goals is to help bring some exposure to what we can, along with our topical (not always) discussion on the mainstream side of the entertainment industry.

Let me take this opportunity to introduce new readers who have come due to the offering of free stuff, to tell you what the purpose of this all is by first explaining the vision of this site (since we are quite new to the whole thing).

East of Nowhere is a collaborative effort started by entertainment lover and critic Brendon Nutt, and comic artist Chuck Conary. Brendon (thats me!) has followed the gaming and movie industry since childhood, and has always anspired to be involved with the business in one way or another. A starving writer (not really, I’m doing okay) and a huge fan of all things entertainment (not Paris Hilton), he has come together with a good friend of his, the talented, but sometimes lazy illustrator, Chuck, to collectively attempt to bring something to those that share their love and passion for what has entertained them throughout their lives.

Since EoN is made up of a small group of writers (and an artist) along with the occasional guest author (always looking, hit us up in e-mail if you want to guest post), we realize that being on-top of news just isn’t going to be our thing. Instead, the direction of East of Nowhere is to create a community of fans of television shows, video games, movies, or just nerd life in general and present reviews and conversational and analytical editorials about the things we love. There is no one more passionate about something than a fan, and that is what we strive to do; entertain and create topics of conversation about all those things we enjoy (along with build up a collection of reviews to one day be seen as a source of reliable criticisms on new projects… and build connections, reviews build connections).

We are new to all this being out on our own, creating new content and working our assess off on providing you, our readers, with something of value. From a webcomic, to reviews, to editorials and articles, we work ourselves to try and create an atmosphere of fandom and community. So, why a contest?

Make it rain!... modest prizes.

Well, thanks to the innovative minds at the video game publishing company Rockin’ Android, we have been given the opportunity to run a contest. Our reviews of a few of the games they have made available for PSN and Steam have caught their attention, and they have given us the resources to run our very first contest! Rockin’ Android is best known for localizing the great indie games of Japan to the states by translating and sometimes remixing the games, as well as giving them a wider release. They are a company who supports the indie market fully, and has released some fantastic games for us, the American audience, to enjoy.

They have supplied us with the prizes to give all of you, in exchange for participating in this contest. So, since this is our first one, and we are a fairly new site. We here at EoN decided to have the readers work with us to help make this site a better place for them. That’s right, not only do we want to hear from you and get your ideas, we want to give you stuff for helping make us a better place for all of you. I think the best thing we can do now is lay out the prizes, then talk about how to enter, and wrap it all up with the thing everyone hates: Rules.

The Prizes!

Thanks to Rockin’ Android our main prize is a full copy of their big title release, Gundemonium Collection. This is a classic SHMUP (Shoot em’ Up) game that is a ton of fun, and comes as part of a new sub-genre within the SHMUP formula known as “Bullet Hell.” It is a great collection that includes three inventive and fun as hell games from the mind of the one man Japanese developer, Platine Dispositif.

The Gundemonium Collection includes all three games in the series:

Gundemonium Recollection

  • GundeadliGne

GundeadliGne

  • Hitogata Happa

Hitogata Happa

All three of the games will be reviewed on this site, so make sure to check them out as I get through them. So far, expect to have many hours sucked away from your life as the gameplay becomes quickly addictive. Winners will receive free access codes for the steam version of the game on PC, and there will be one more prize on-top of this for the grand prize winner.

Grand Prize Winner Will Get:

  • Xbox Live Points or
  • PSN bucks or
  • An Amazon Gift Card

The Grand Prize winner will get to select what they want, and the prize value will differ depending upon how successful this contest is (let us put it this way, the prize value starts at 15 dollars, expect to hear updates as this picks up steam). The more contestants we get, the bigger the grand prize. Now on to the contest itself, followed by rules and how prizes can be won.

The Contest!

The contest is simple, we want to hear from all of you. There are many things you can do, and since we have 2 different types of prizes to give away, there will be a couple of ways to enter.

1. Comment here on the contest post with comments about:

  • What do you think of the site so far?
  • What would you like to see from a site that is dedicated to a conversational atmosphere about movies, TV, and games?
  • Is there anything you would like to see us cover or talk about?
  • Should we continue to make smaller posts on news topics that analyze the news with a sense of humor?
  • Or just well, whatever. Give us something constructive, or just boost our egos.

2. Comment on one of our posts:

3. Tweet about the contest

That’s about it folks. Help us help you. By supporting our work, and helping us create better content for fans of entertainment, we may be able to hold more contests like this and better our craft at giving all of you something worth reading.

Rules and How To Win!

With three different ways to enter, that’s three different chances to put your name into the drawing for the main prize of a free copy of the Gundemonium Collection. Each entry from comment posts, comments on this post, and tweets will all go into a drawing for 1 of 6 available codes.

  • Only one tweet, one comment on posts, and HUHY (Help Us Help You) comment on the contest post will be entered.
  • Multiple comments or entries into each of the three categories will not equal another entry. 3 max entries, 1 from submitting something in each of the above listed entry options.
  • Make sure comments are entered with an e-mail attached to them (Guest comments wont count, must be signed into Disqus through their login, or through a Facebook or Twitter account. Make sure whatever account you use has a valid e-mail attached).

The Grand Prize, on the other hand, will be selected by the staff. The individual that contributed the best ideas, comments, and helped support us and our growth through this contest will be selected for this prize.

So, let’s get some ideas rolling. That is up to 3 entries for the random draw of a free copy of the Gundemonium Collection (5 possible winners) and as many entries as you want for the 1 selected winner for the grand prize (Gundemonium Collection, and a prize of your choice from the options listed in the prize list; Value to stack as more people enter). That makes it both easy to enter, with multiple ways to enter, and a grand prize given for those that put in the effort to really support what we are working towards, and that’s giving the community a site that supports them.

Contest is officially closed, the winners are as follows:

Grand Prize - @DanDlionRo

Free Game Winners:

1 – Nina Mustang
2 -  @fadedispirit
3 – Joseph Cortez
4 – @EmpressDonna
5 – @Fox Synergy

Those with e-mails provided have been contacted, Twitter contacts have been sent private message. If for whatever reason you have not received any e-mail, feel free to contact us via e-mail or on twitter and we will get back to you.

Not entering contest due to being friends with both creators.. But Congradufuckinglations. This is a big jump for you guys. I will be posting this up to everyone to get some word on it out.

  • Terence Tan

I must say, this site is something to look forward to in the online community! +1
Can’t wait for more news on this site.

  • Joseph Cortez

I think that the site is good so far. Though I think there is problem with the ads and the affiliates links. It takes away from the sites design and does not blend well.

I would to see you continue the plan of having the commenter’s communicate with you. It is cool that we can actually post comments and have the writers respond. Makes us feel that we are a part of the site.

One thing I would like to see covered is more shmups. I haven’t played any in a long while and I wonder what would come about during the conversations about the newer shmups out there.

Humor is always good, but too much of it can takeaway from the sites content. I say bring it on and see what works and what does not.

I like the idea of this site, and where it is headed. I look forward to being a part of it and the work that you will be doing.

    See y’all soon

hi it’s nina i want to join the contest.be entered into the contest.for a chance to win prizes.

  • Nina Mustang

    i can’t wait to win.

I’m actually pretty new to the whole SHMUP thing in this modern age. I’ve played a few back when I was younger in arcades, but doing my research when getting a copy of the Gundemonium Collection has been quite the revelation. I never realized how far the genre has come through the indie market, especially in Japan.

I look forward to playing more myself and seeing how they have evolved or how they separate themselves from each other.

I am honestly considering getting rid of google adsense, just because it hasn’t done much for us, and it does look incredibly out of place. A Re-design on the twitter ad may be in order, perhaps our illustrator can be put up to it.

Good job with the site, If anything can be better is just adding more game reviews ; ), keep up the good work!

  • Joseph Cortez

I know what you mean, I only played a handful of shmups when I was younger. But it is hard to keep track of all the new ones that are coming since most of them stay in Japan. Well expect for Cave titles and a handful of others.I don’t think the twitter ad needs to be changed much. Just the coloring of the banner.

First I would like to apologize for my poor english x]

I’ll list things that in my opinion could help you improve your site:
    1. Grab some attention – everytime when there is free stuff given over the internet, it attracts people (like myself x) ), but here you can’t see many entries, only few and I’m almost sure people got here via Rockin’ Android. You may try different ways like steam community groups or youtube channel filled with video reviews (this has become very popular lately and since you specialize in indie titles, your video review may appear  in the first place when searched in YT).

    2. Change that color font in comment, it’s barely visible ;3

    3.  When I hover over buttons at the top of site and I want to choose something the list disappears (Opera user here).

Two last points were rather technical suggestion but still.

I’d say your main goal for now should be betting some audience, reviewing is pointless if no one reads it.

Overall I think the site has some potential, you talk about many things, not only games for example, so it’s gives you advantage over other sites since they’re monothematic.
